Nominated for 9 Emmys and 2 Golden Globes, Scrubs premiered in Fall 2001 to average fanfare and a decent Nielsen rating of #34. And even though series has yet to achieve hit scores, it has managed to develop a loyal group of followers specialized in its unique make of humor and quirky characters. Developed by Bill Lawrence (creator of Spin City), Scrubs is just a spoof on the dearth of hospital dramas that have cropped up since ER popularized the genre. In an expression, its what Greys Anatomy will be like if Ben Stiller were the lead character.
Recorded in a real living hospital (North Hollywood Medical Center), Scrubs follows the bungling day-to-day experiences of medical intern Dr. John J.D. Dorian (Zach Braff). Along with his university buddy Dr. Christopher Turk (Donald Faison), the 2 newcomers must learn the basics of daily life in a real hospital setting. But Sacred Heart, their new stomping ground, is the apex of a dysfunctional work environment. One might easily believe that everyones job is to remove on J.D. In getting his feet wet, the young intern butts heads with numerous people such as for instance other intern and possible love interest Dr. Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), cranky Chief of Medicine Dr. Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins), the ever-abrasive Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley), pessimistic nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes), and a cynical janitor (Neil Flynn).
Uniforms is just a character-driven show thats exceptionally well-written, and the acting is excellent. John C. McGinley is fantastic in the position of Dr. Cox, a performance almost as his depiction of guide Bob Slydell as unique in Office Space. His delivery is almost as excellent as that of Ken Jenkins who often resembles Lloyd Bridges from Airplane with his uncanny capability to offer absurd one-liners with a straight face. Seasoned talents Sarah Chalke (Becky from Roseanne) and Donald Faison (Murray from Clueless) round out a great supporting cast for Zach Braff who makes his mark with this very likeable personality. Ultimately, Scrubs is a situation comedy built on the strength of biting sarcasm and brilliant humor. And though its already enjoyed a fruitful five-year work, its probably one of many most underappreciated comedies on network TV. Do yourself a, If you havent yet observed it and check it out. You won't be disappointed.
